US calls on China to “restrain” over military maneuvers around Taiwan

The exercises, announced by China’s military this Saturday, include the deployment of “missiles, conventional missiles, ships and aircraft,” the state CCTV channel reported.

Tsai met Republican McCarthy on Wednesday in Los Angeles, where he was stopping over on his way back to Taiwan after a tour of Central America.

The situation is reminiscent of what happened in August 2022, when the visit to Taiwan of then Speaker of the House of Representatives Democrat Nancy Pelosi enraged Beijing, which responded with military maneuvers around the island to a trip it described as “farce”. and “deplorable betrayal”.

The island, which Beijing considers a rebel province, is one of the biggest sources of conflict between China and the United States, especially since Washington is Taiwan’s main arms supplier and would be its biggest military ally in the event of war.

The United States has subscribed to the “one China” policy since 1979, but maintains close unofficial relations with Taiwan despite the fact that it does not recognize its independence.
