Pope ready for urbi et orbi after Good Friday absence

Pope Francis started the Easter Mass in the Vatican. Because of his poor health, he was taken to the altar. He was also in a wheelchair last night at the Easter Watch. Francis has been struggling with knee problems for some time now.

Later in the morning, thousands of spectators in St. Peter’s Square will receive the annual Easter blessing, urbi et orbi. It is customary for the Pope to do this from the middle balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica.

On Good Friday, the spiritual leader did not attend the traditional Stops of the Cross in the Colosseum. It was very cold outside for Franciscus, 86, who had been sick since the end of March.

The Way of the Cross is a traditional parade in the Colosseum where Christians commemorate the suffering of Jesus. The Pope was absent from the parade for the first time since he took office in 2013.

bronchitis infection

Francis had to stay in the hospital for several days last week due to a bronchitis infection. It was therefore exciting to be able to attend all the services and celebrations during Holy Week, one of the busiest times of the year.

The Pope was allowed to leave the hospital last Saturday after being treated with antibiotics. It is unclear whether he has fully recovered.
