The BBC’s Australian counterpart has created a documentary on the subject of Welsh independence.
This documentary, titled Red Dragon Awakens, is part of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) Foreign Correspondents series.
The documentary aired in late March, but is still available. In the article, they look at how issues such as poverty and Brexit have fueled the rise of the Welsh independence movement since 2016. An advertisement for the documentary, presented by Nicholas Dole, reads: “You have been promised a better Britain. The new independence movement is gaining momentum.
If you support independence for Wales because you want to return to the EU, then you are making a big mistake.
Then Cardiff University professor Laura McAllister talks about how young people in particular are much more likely to think of themselves as Welsh than British.
Indeed, support for Wales’ independence has risen sharply since 2016, but a survey by WalesOnline on St David’s Day found that the number of people supporting an independent Wales has fallen to its lowest level since the pandemic.
However, the decline in independence does not appear to be due to a significant increase in support for remaining in the union. The YouGov poll shows that the percentage of people who said they would vote to stay in the UK is pretty steady at 55%. Instead, the shift appears to be driven by a growing number of people who say they don’t know how they would vote, as high as 16%. Only 4% would not say so.
This chart shows how support for independence appears to have waned over the past year, but is still well above the level seen a decade ago.
The chief executive of YesCymru said the latest Wales independence poll should be a “wake-up call” to the wider movement in Wales.
