“30 killed in army attack on rebel group in Myanmar”

At least 30 people were killed in an attack by the military against an anti-military regime group in Myanmar. This was reported by the Reuters news agency based on local media reports. Some of these reports mention fifty deaths.

The attack is said to have taken place during a rebel incident in the Sagaing district. Civilians are said to be among the dead.

A member of the People’s Defense Force (PDF), an armed group fighting against the military regime, said warplanes opened fire as a new rebel office opened. “Exactly how many people died is still unclear. “We haven’t collected all the bodies yet,” he said.

There is a conflict between ethnic separatist movements and military rulers in Myanmar. The military seized power in the country in 2021 and expelled the National League for Democracy from parliament. Party leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years in prison in a series of cases her allies said were politically motivated.

Myanmar has been restless since the coup. According to the UN, one million Burmese fled the eruption of violence and more than 3,000 people died. Many citizens fled to Bangladesh, India or Thailand.

To choose

At the end of last month, the regime in Myanmar paralyzed almost all opposition. Nearly forty parties are not allowed to participate in the elections. The remaining parties do not pose a threat to the power of the junta, no date has yet been set for the elections.

The military regime has little international legitimacy. Its most important ally is still Russia. Most of the army’s weapons, vehicles and fuel come from Russia.
