Norway expels 15 Russian diplomats: ‘They are spies’

The Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it declared “persona non grata” 15 employees believed to be “Russian intelligence agents” at the Moscow embassy in Oslo. The same ministry also reports on its official Twitter account.

“15 intelligence officers engaged in activities incompatible with their diplomatic status,” said Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt. Mentioning the increasing threat from Russia in the wake of the war against Ukraine, Huitfeldt describes the expulsion of Russian citizens as “an important step in countering and reducing the level of Russian intelligence activity in Norway and thereby protecting our national interests”.

Explaining that 15 embassy employees will have to leave Norway in a short time and Moscow intelligence personnel will not be granted entry visas, Huitfeldt said, “Russia poses the biggest intelligence threat to Norway at the moment. We take this very seriously and are currently implementing it. Precautions against the activities of Russian intelligence in our country. “We will not allow Russian intelligence officers to operate in Norway under diplomatic guise.” Moscow’s response is ready: Russian Foreign Ministry informed Tass that “the Russian side will give an adequate response”.
