The US state of Montana is about to ban the download of the TikTok app. A new law makes it illegal for app stores to offer the app. People who have already downloaded the app can continue to use it.
Republican Governor Greg Gianforte is expected to sign the law. Previously, the Montana government had banned the use of TikTok on its devices. If Gianforte signs into law, Montana will be the first state to introduce such a ban. The law will then enter into force in 2024.

The social media app of Chinese company ByteDance has been under fire for a while. There are fears that the Chinese government could monitor what TikTok users are doing. That’s why government employees are already banned from downloading the app to their work phone in many European countries and the US. A similar ban was recently introduced in the Netherlands.
Montana also expressed concern about the safety of minors who are encouraged by the app to engage in dangerous activities such as cooking chicken in a medicine canister and climbing milk crates.
