Explosion at Prime Minister Kishida rally: Police arrest suspect

In Japan, fear for Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was evacuated after an explosion at Saikazaki Port in Wakayama Prefecture in the west of the country. Kishida, unharmed, was in Saikazaki to attend an event in support of the Liberal Democratic Party’s local election candidate.

The explosion occurred shortly before Kishida began his speech at the event, NHK reported. No injuries were reported, with Kishida being transported to Wakayama Prefectural Police Headquarters.

All of this takes place on the eve of a series of ministerial meetings of the G7, with a view to the summit on May 19 and 21 that Kishida will host in Hiroshima, and just nine months after the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, assassinated during an election speech in the western city of Nara.

Immediately after the attack, Japanese police arrested a suspect. Footage on Japanese NHK television showed several uniformed and plainclothes police officers converging around the man, who was pushed to the ground and dragged to one side. The suspect, identified as a young man, would have thrown the explosive, informs NHK.
