Bomb by the paramilitaries, what happens in Sudan: “Pro-Russia coup”

Chaos erupts in Sudan after paramilitary groups attempt a coup to overthrow the country’s ruling army. This morning, gunfights broke out in Khartoum between regular troops and rapid support forces who announced that they control the capital’s airport, which was bombed by aviation. The paramilitaries then announced that they had also captured the presidential palace.

“Fire is also being fired on Khartoum 2. Heavy weapons are also being used and tanks are circulating, loud explosions are being heard”, they inform from the sector of the Sudanese capital where the Italian Embassy is located. The Farnesina Crisis Unit urged Italians present in Khartoum not to leave their homes while intense fighting is taking place in the capital. “The airport is currently closed and many roads are blocked.”

The UN Special Representative for Sudan, Volker Perthes, called in a statement for “an immediate cessation of fighting to ensure the safety of the Sudanese people and spare the country from further violence”. Perthes, it is explained, contacted both parties, namely the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Pro-Russian RSF militias, controlled by Transitional Council Deputy Chairman Mohamed Hamdan “Hemeti” Dagalo and supported by the Russian Wagner group, are said to have taken control of Khartoum’s presidential palace, Merowe airport, north of the capital and also from the national television headquarters. An attack described as “brutal” by regular forces. Four years after the overthrow of President Omar al Bashir in Sudan in April 2019, the political process agreed upon by most forces in the field to establish a civilian-led government still seems a long way off.
