At least 3 dead and dozens injured in riots in Sudan

At least three civilians were killed and dozens injured in armed clashes between the paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (FAR) and the Sudanese army on Saturday, the Sudanese Arts Union reports.

In its first preliminary report, the union noted that at least two civilians were killed at Khartoum airport, the largest in Sudan, and one more was shot down in Al Obeid, in the south of the African country.

The commission also noted that an armed forces officer was wounded in the town of Omdurman, neighboring Khartoum, and three civilians were shot in the neck and leg in the south of the capital and east of the Nile.

These are the first casualties since clashes between the FAR and the army broke out this morning, with the Doctors Union pointing out that “dozens of injuries have been recorded so far, including unstable injuries.”

The FAR accused the Sudanese army of taking an action against one of its bases in Khartoum, while the armed forces claimed that it was carried out in response to an attack the FAR had previously carried out in Khartoum.

These clashes come two days after the army warned the country is in a “dangerous situation” that could lead to armed conflict, after FAR units “mobilized” in the Sudanese capital and other cities without permission or coordination from the armed forces. .

This mobilization took place during the negotiations to reach a final political agreement that would end the 2021 coup and lead Sudan to a democratic transition, a pact whose signing was postponed twice in April precisely because of the tensions and rivalries between the Army and the FAR.

The FAR originated from the Yanyawid militias, accused of committing crimes against humanity during the Darfur conflict (2003-2008) and is led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, aka Hemedti, who is considered the most powerful man in the world all of Sudan.
