Police are urging citizens not to take the law into their own hands after riots sparked by concerns about a sex offender.

Dyfed Powys Police say they are investigating incidents of criminal damage and disturbances on a street in Llanelli caused by “communal tension over an individual”. Authorities say the man who apparently instigated the disturbance no longer lives in the area, stressing that “effective processes” are in place to monitor the behavior of registered sex offenders. Police Headquarters at Begin Road, Llanelli, is investigating the incidents.

A spokeswoman for Dyfed Powys Police said: “We are investigating several incidents of criminal damage and disturbances in Biggin Road, Llanelli which are the result of tension in the community over a person who used to live in the area but does not live there. We recognize the strong feelings in the local community and work hard as local law enforcement to fulfill our duty to ensure the safety of all members of our community.

“Together with our partners, we have effective processes in place to monitor and manage the behavior of registered sex offenders through the Inter-Agency Organization for Public Protection (MAPPA) process. Please do not engage in any illegal activity or take the law into your own hands. If criminal offenses are committed, we will take appropriate action.”
