Girl drove her dad’s car over 400 miles for a virtual date

The 14-year-old girl and her boyfriend surrendered to authorities in Bayou La Batre, Alabama, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office in North Florida.

According to local media, the teens surrendered to police after seeing television commercials at a gas station warning the public of their disappearance, and searches conducted by local and state officials in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana.

The alert said the two little girls were heading west on a highway from Lake Butler, Florida, to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, last Thursday morning.

According to Union County Deputy Captain Lyn Williams, the girls were riding in the vehicle of the 12-year-old girl’s father without an adult and were on their way to “meet someone they had met online.”

Authorities don’t know the age of the person the girls want to meet, and according to Williams, there were some “suspicious circumstances” on the meeting schedule that caught the officers’ particular attention.

The case has been referred to the FBI for further investigation.
