“A supreme decree has been approved declaring a state of emergency in the border area of the departments of Tumbes, Piura, Cajamarca, Amazonas, Loreto, Madre de Dios and Tacna,” the president announced. Dinah Boluarte with reference to all Peruvian regions that have a border, to which is added Puno, where this exceptional regime is already in place due to the protests.
Boluarte confirmed that this measure will “improve the implementation of police operations related to border control to prevent internal order and the constitutional rights of the population”.
It added that in this regard the Peruvian National Police (PNP) will “maintain control of internal order, with the support of the armed forces”.
However, the president announced that the executive branch will propose to Congress a “constitutional revision to allow the intervention of the Armed Forces in the border regions”.
