The first green light has been given to the appointment of Luigi Di Maio as the EU’s special representative to the Gulf states. The Political and Security Committee, a body made up of ambassadors from member states, approved the appointment of the former Italian foreign minister. The transition took place without question.
Di Maio was selected by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell. A controversial election among representatives of the government majority in Italy. However, for the time being, the Italian representation in Brussels did not oppose the appointment. Two more steps are needed for Di Maio to take office definitively: the green light from Coreper, the EU permanent committee of government representatives, and finally, the approval of the EU Council of Ministers.
