Putin: “Those who do not acquire Russian citizenship will be expelled from the Ukrainian regions”

The situation in Ukraine is getting more and more critical. Today, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the law approved by the Parliament on deportations from the territory of Ukraine. Anyone who does not acquire Russian citizenship will be considered a foreigner. Ukrainians who refuse to become Russian citizens may be deported for activities that include “participating in unauthorized rallies and demonstrations” if seen as “a threat to national security”.

According to reports from Tass, the sentences for the crime of “treason” would be increased to life imprisonment, and so far punishable by up to 20 years in prison in Russia. The maximum penalty for terrorist attacks was also increased from 15 to 20 years.

Stating that the four regions of Ukraine annexed by Russia are Russia’s “historical lands” and their inhabitants are “part of our people”, Putin added that “we must defend and protect their final decision to return to Russia.”

The Russian president then returned to speaking out against the West, reminding that all Russian officials must work as a “cohesive and well-coordinated team” to confront the “economic aggression of the West”.
