William and Kate were greeted by a cheering crowd and dozens of children waving Welsh flags before being led by survivor David Davies through the site of the former Pantglass Primary School, which was obstructed by a mineslide.

Denise Morgan, whose nine-year-old sister Annette was killed in the crash, explained what it was like to see the royal family in Aberfan today. She said, “We’ve always had a strong connection to royalty,” she says. “Seeing the youngest members of the royal family come out today is something really special. For us, this is an indication that Aberfan will never be forgotten.
“What William and Catherine did today is heartwarming. As generations pass, we don’t want Aberfan to be forgotten. It is gratifying that members of the royal family have assured us today that this loyalty will continue. Even if it’s your first visit. Today, we hope, will not be the last.”
