Tragic bus-truck accident on the highway: 14 dead and 25 injured

The budget is scary. 14 people were killed and 25 injured when a public transport bus collided with a truck on the highway in Egypt. The traffic accident occurred on the Assuit-Kharga highway in the southwestern part of the country, in a desert area about 400 km from Cairo.

State news agency MENA, quoting the local governor, said 17 ambulances were sent to the scene to transport the injured to hospitals. Reckless driving, lax traffic rules and poor road conditions cause many accidents in Egypt. Hassan Mahdi, a professor at the Faculty of Engineering at Ain Shams University in Cairo, recently told Al-Monitor, “The main cause of traffic accidents is the human factor. If the problem were roads, the accidents would be repeated at the same points. In Egypt, drivers speeding on the roads and not obeying the traffic lanes cause traffic accidents.”

But many want the reorganization of heavy vehicle traffic, which is almost always involved in the most serious road crashes. According to the NADA Foundation for Safer Corn Roads, The death rate from traffic accidents in Egypt, an Egyptian non-governmental organization, is among the highest in the world, with 42 deaths per 100,000 people. The foundation said road crashes have long been the number one cause of death for Egyptian youth aged 15 to 35, with an average of four children dying every day during or as a result of car crashes. 50,000 people are injured or maimed every year.

One million three hundred thousand people die in traffic accidents every year around the world. More than 90% of deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, although they only account for about 45% of vehicles on the roads.
