A real “hurricane of fire” brings the Kurgan region to its knees in Siberian Russia. A fierce fire devastates forested areas and approaches residential areas, the situation is critical in many places and planes cannot take off. The governor of Kurgan district, Vadim Shumkov, declared a state of emergency in the entire region, calling on citizens: “In case of danger, evacuate immediately, take children and elderly relatives with you”.
According to local media reports, people have been evacuated from the village of Juldus, where around 20 houses and a school were engulfed in flames. Dozens of people were hospitalized for burns and poisoning. There are currently four confirmed victims, but the toll could get worse.
Authorities have sent additional resources, hundreds of people, and special vehicles to the site to deal with the emergency: For days, firefighters have been unable to put out the flames, especially due to strong winds. It’s a dramatic situation that’s difficult to manage, as the bulk of Russia’s military forces have been in the conflict with Ukraine, which has been going on for over a year. A hell shown by images that users share on social networks: burning woods and dilapidated houses. Regional authorities launched an investigation to clarify the causes of these terrible fires and punish those responsible.
