Ukraine War, G7 Split Over Peace, Russia Defeat

The war between Russia and Ukraine causes yet another rift. Indeed, even the G7 countries have divergent opinions about the degree of support that can be offered to Ukraine or to what extent Russia can be defeated, with the conflict, on the eve of the start of the announced counter-offensive, the main theme of the summit of Hiroshima. The United States, reveals the Washington Post, does not hide its skepticism about how much Kiev can achieve in its long front with Moscow. And they have come to imagine an endless war of attrition that will fuel Korea’s frozen conflict model. At this stage, visions, already different between countries since the beginning of the conflict, are destined to sharpen. And non-Western countries, less motivated from the start to arm Kiev to the teeth, are pushing for a solution to the crisis.

Of all those undertaken recently (Brazil, African countries led by South Africa and the Vatican), China’s peace initiative is the most substantial. Even if the American newspaper emphasizes how its proposals are essentially aimed at maintaining Moscow’s advantage and opposing Ukraine. And that the mission of Beijing’s special envoy to Kiev in recent days appears to have been unsuccessful.

There was substantial agreement among G7 leaders on the need to occupy the space, with a possible peace summit, to ensure that nothing is decided on Ukraine without the Ukrainian government. Support for Volodymyr Zelensky’s ten-point peace plan remains, without preconceived closure of any other elements or principles. The aim is for peace to include the withdrawal of Russian troops, not simply a ceasefire that would result in the current situation on the battlefield freezing. There are still many knots to untie in the conflict.
