The United States has added hundreds of other companies and people to its sanctions blacklist against Russia. The new sanctions particularly targeted companies and research institutes involved in Moscow’s investments in future energy production, including plans to exploit Arctic resources. And they are targeting companies that supply components Russia needs to produce its Orlan reconnaissance drone, including a Chinese company. In all, nearly 300 people, companies, institutions, ships and aircraft were added to the US Treasury and State Department blacklists. The announcement was made during the G7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan. “Today’s actions will further strain Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ability to stop his barbarian invasion,” said US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen. “Our collective efforts have cut Russia off of key inputs it needs to equip its armed forces and are severely limiting the revenue the Kremlin receives to fund its war machine,” he said in a statement. The new sanctions include dozens of Russian defense industry companies and technology traders, directors of the country’s main gold mines and associates of already blacklisted senior Russian officials. They include Russia’s biggest gold producer and companies and individuals allegedly involved in grain theft from Ukraine.
Special attention was paid to institutions involved in Russian energy development, including universities that develop and train people in mining and energy transformation technologies, companies that support the oil and coal industry, and institutions that finance development. Treasury said the effort was “taking targeted actions to limit Russia’s future extractive capabilities” after Ukraine’s Western allies instituted a cap on Russian oil exports to limit its potential currency gains. “Today’s actions implement new commitments made at the summit of G7 leaders and demonstrate our common determination to hold Russia accountable for its escalating atrocities in Ukraine,” said Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
