Roxana Ruiz has been convicted of murdering a man who sexually assaulted her

On May 7, 2021, Roxana went for a beer with some acquaintances Nezahualcoyotl, State of Mexico.

As she was about to leave the place, a man she knew appeared and offered to take her home.

Once there, he insisted she let him stay the night as he lived far away, to which she agreed.

Later, according to Roxana, the young man got into her bed, he beat her, raped her and threatened to kill her.

She reached for a T-shirt and strangled him.

Then, put the body in a bagbut the authorities arrested her and imprisoned her in a prison where she spent nine months and from which she was released thanks to the support of feminist organizations and their lawyers.

On that occasion, Carrera says, they charged her with murder and violating burial and exhumation laws.

While they cleared her of the latter, they reclassified the former as simple murder with outrageous defense.

The fight that continues is so that Roxana doesn’t go back to prison, for which they appeal the sentence.

“This is a precedent for women. If this statement were to stand, women would simply not be able to defend themselves or would think: ‘Even if she defends me, I will go to jail’, which is the case with Roxana,” Carrera emphasizes.

Roxana also believes that if she goes back to prison, her sentence will set a precedent for every other woman to be raped.

“It shouldn’t be like that, because what is the message that the judiciary is sending here now? That women have two things: be in prison or be dead,” says the 23-year-old, still irritated.
