Prince Harry loses lawsuit against British government

Prince Harry has lost his legal case against the Home Office for refusing to provide him with Metropolitan Police protection when he is in Britain. When the Duke of Sussex was informed that he no longer qualified for such protection, he offered to pay for it himself. The UK Home Office responded that “police officers are not private bodyguards”.

The Prince has thus challenged the decision in court, believing he should have been allowed to pay, in the same way that UK football clubs pay staff to maintain order during matches. But the request was denied.
Metropolitan Police officials told the court their officers are not “payers” for the rich and famous, arguing that allowing Harry to pay for protection from armed police would set an “unacceptable precedent”.

The duke has lost his “free” protection since moving to the United States and no longer represents the royal family at public events. Lawyers for the police underlined, in the judgment, that “it is wrong to endanger officers against the payment of fees by a private individual”.
