‘Police jammed and killed them’: death of two boys on bikes triggers riot

Two boys aged 16 and 15 died in Cardiff, Wales, after falling off their electric bikes. Immediately after the incident, a group of residents gathered to protest the police accused of chasing and hitting two underage children, killing them. The protest soon turned into clashes with the police that lasted for hours. At first, the local police station denied the follow-up, but the version was dismissed by a CCTV video, further inflaming the nerves.

The tragedy occurred Monday afternoon in Ely, a suburb of Cardiff. Shortly after 6:00 pm local time, 16-year-old Kyrees Sullivan and 15-year-old Harvey Evans fell from their electric bikes and died. Someone witnessed the scene and immediately accused the police of bumping into two teenagers during a chase. The claim immediately spread on social media and a crowd gathered at the scene of the accident. From that moment on, a real revolt broke out against the agents who came to the rescue of their colleagues: wrecked cars, clashes and 15 injured policemen.

The defense of Commissioner Alun Michael on Tuesday morning, which categorically denied that the incident was caused by the pursuit of his agents and argued that the riots were based on fake news circulating on social media, also fueled the anger of residents. A few hours after their statements, a security camera video was posted on social networks that showed another version of the facts: at 17.59, that is, shortly before the accident, a police van quickly supported two teenagers.

At this point, South Wales police leaders held an emergency press conference, announcing that they had watched the video, and launched an internal investigation. “A full investigation is now needed into how this tragic event led to the violence that followed, to ensure peace is restored and that it never happens again,” said Jane Hutt, Welsh Minister for Social Justice.
