A man drowned in Alaska on Sunday after being stuck waist-deep in the mud of the Turnagain Arm. Zachary Porter, 20, originally from Illinois, took advantage of the low tide to walk with three friends along the beach near Hope on the Kenai Peninsula south of Anchorage. The young man was suddenly stranded at 17.52. A friend immediately called 911 and the Girdwood Fire Department attempted to rescue the young man by injecting water, but rescuers were unable to save him before a wave came and shut him down. So Porter died at 18:43.
The alluvial plains are locally known to be extremely dangerous – the Turnagain Arm is a body of water with one of the fastest incoming tides in the world. What appears to be solid ground can turn into a swamp with little or no warning. Firefighters rescued a fisherman two weeks ago and an expert in October.
