It was the most massive attack since the start of the war to hit the capital Kiev overnight. The bulletin was provided by local authorities as the city in Ukraine prepares to celebrate the national holiday in memory of the founding anniversary. According to Kiev, Ukrainian anti-aircraft guns shot down 52 Iranian-made Shahed drones: at least one person was killed, a 41-year-old man was hit by the fallen debris, and a woman was injured and hospitalized. The Ukrainian capital was attacked regularly throughout the month of May: this was the 14th raid and the attack – according to the city’s military administration – was carried out in several waves with anti-aircraft sirens sounding for 5 consecutive hours. On the last Sunday in May, the Ukrainian capital celebrates ‘Kiev Day’, the anniversary of its official founding 1,541 years ago.
Kiev Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko said the first explosions took place around 1 am local time, but the drones continued to arrive in waves and from various directions throughout the night. The Kyiv Independent website says the attack may be part of a Russian plan to deplete Ukraine’s air defenses, which include US-supplied Patriot anti-missile systems, on the eve of an expected Ukrainian counter-offensive. Russia continues its unabated war.
