Worried that the cost of living crisis could sabotage his hopes of winning the next general election, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak wants to ask supermarkets to set a price cap on basic food items such as bread and milk. According to The Telegraph, it would be an agreement similar to that made in France, where the main retailers charge “as little as possible” for some essential food products.
If successful, “it would be the most incisive attempt to manage supermarket prices since the controls established by Edward Heath in 1973”. In the Prime Minister’s entourage it is stressed that any step by retailers would be voluntary, but the news confirms the Government’s growing concern with the pressure exerted by families due to inflation. “Food inflation is much more resilient and difficult to eliminate than we expected,” a Treasury source said. The price increase scares everyone in Europe.
