Erdogan wins the presidential elections in Türkiye, according to official sources

The current head of state, the Islamist Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, He won the second round of this Sunday’s presidential election in Turkey, after controlling 54.60% of the vote, according to official sources.

At that point in the recount, Erdogan had 54.47% of the vote compared to 45.58% for his rival, Social Democrat Kemal Kiliçdaroglu, Turkish Election Commission Chairman Ahmet Yener said.

That percentage of votes makes Erdogan the virtual winner of the elections, according to official sources.

Earlier, the official news agency Anadolu had reported that Erdogan led the vote with 52.7%, compared to 47.3% for Kilicdarogluwhile the private agency ANKA also put the current president and head of government in the lead, albeit with a more fiercely fought result.

After learning of these results, Hungary’s Prime Minister, ultra-nationalist Viktor Orbán, congratulated Erdogan on his “undisputable” victory.

“Congratulations to President Erdogan on his unquestionable election victory!” Orbán wrote in a tweet.

And more than an hour before the meeting, the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, congratulated Recep Tayyip Erdogan “on his victory” in the country’s elections today, when the vote was still ongoing and the winner of the second round was not yet known.

On May 14, none of the candidates secured the majority required to become head of state in the first round of the presidential election, which was held in conjunction with the legislative election.

That day, Erdogan won by touching an absolute majority by taking 49.5% of the vote, compared to 44.9% for Kiliçdaroglu, with a participation in the polls of 89% on Turkish territory and 86% if she is in the calculation also includes the more than three million citizens living abroad.
