The horrified cruise passengers had an unforgettable adventure, unfortunately for themselves. A storm hit the Carnival cruise ship in South Carolina, flooding it and ripping the doors off their hinges. The panic scenes were compared to those on the Titanic: Beyond the property damage, the disturbances affecting the passengers were evident.
Journey of the Carnival Sun
Carnival Sunshine was returning to mooring after a week’s voyage to the Bahamas when the weather hit. Videos posted online by vacationers show corridors filled with glass and other debris, doors torn from their hinges, and destroyed pipes on the floor.
The ship’s crew had to evacuate their cabins. During the storm, several passengers also complained that they were starting to feel sick from the boat’s sudden movements: One traveler said he could “smell sick people walking in the aisles”, the Daily Mail reported.

Passengers also complained that they had not heard from the ship’s captain or crew for hours. “They left us blind,” said one of the passengers. “No one gave any assurances about what was going on, where we were going, what the plan was. They could have updated us and let us know everything.” Another passenger said he had not heard from the captain or crew for more than 12 hours. In addition, after the storm damage, all the rubble remained in the corridors and rooms.
Finally, the ship returned to port behind schedule.
