“Fire is out of control, evacuate the city”

“Mandatory to evacuate the city” is an order of the Canadian authorities of Halifax, the capital city of Nova Scotia, a province in Eastern Canada. More than 18,000 people had to flee their homes due to the large number of fires still out of control. A state of emergency was declared on Sunday, May 28, as the fire also caused power outages. President Justin Troudeau described the situation as “incredibly serious”, while Halifax Mayor Mike Savage described the fire as “unprecedented”. According to authorities, the flames have already destroyed at least 200 homes and buildings and burned more than 100 square kilometers of land. There have been no reports of death or injury so far.

Fire chief Dave Meldrum said the causes of the fire were still being investigated. More than 100 firefighters battled the flames overnight and again, according to the fire chief, “there will be a lot of work in the coming days”. The state of emergency will be in effect for the next seven days.

Fires are not common in this part of the country, but drought and high temperatures have facilitated the spread of fires. There have been about 176 fires in recent weeks, and the specific reasons for such a large number are not yet clear. In addition to Nova Scotia, the provinces of Alberta have also been affected in recent weeks, with about 3,000 people still displaced.
