A disaster of enormous dimensions occurred in India on Saturday, June 2nd. The death toll in the railway accident that involved three trains, one freight train and two passenger trains, is extremely serious. At least 288 people died in the clash and over a thousand were injured, as reported by CNN. According to reports from The Times of India, an investigation has been launched into the causes of the incident. The incident took place in Balasore district about 250 km south of Kolkata and 170 km north of Bhubaneswar at around 7 pm yesterday. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a tweet, said he was “distressed by the train accident in Odisha”.

“At this time of grief, my thoughts go out to the bereaved families,” Modi continued. May the wounded recover soon,” he added. Modi also made it known that he had spoken with the Indian Minister of Railways to take stock of the situation and ensured “all possible assistance to those affected”. India’s President Draupadi Murmu said on Twitter that she was “deeply distressed to learn of the loss of life in an unfortunate train accident in Balasore, Odisha. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I pray for the success of the rescue operations and for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
