Leaving Kiev to its fate and letting Russia dominate Ukraine is unthinkable for Nikki Haley. Donald Trump’s opponent, as well as Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, expressed their opinion on the war between Volodymyr Zelensky and Vladimir Putin in the upcoming Republican primaries. The essence of the speech by the former US ambassador to the UN in the Trump administration is that a defeat by Ukraine would undoubtedly cause a world war, and therefore the United States and its allies have an obligation to do everything possible to stop the Russian advance. “It’s something bigger than Ukraine, it’s a war for freedom that we must win,” said the former governor of South Carolina, during a CNN ‘town hall’ in Iowa.
Therefore, “we have to understand that a victory for Ukraine is a victory for all of us”. Otherwise, according to Haley, the consequences would be irreparable for the future of world democracy. “Tyrants tell us exactly what they are going to do: China said it would take Hong Kong and it did, Russia said it would invade Ukraine and you see what is happening.” At this rate, the United States will be surrounded, that is the main concern. “China has said Taiwan will be next, Russia has expressed its willingness to invade Poland and the Baltic countries as well, and if that happens we will have a world war.” The Republican’s speech suggests that her support for Zelensky, in case of success in the 2024 primaries, would be unequivocal: “We have to avoid a war. Everyone wants to know how it will end? The day will end when Russia withdraws. But if Ukraine gives up, we will have a world war.”
Haley’s position clashes with that of Trump who, instead, to contradict current President Joe Biden, is developing his election campaign by leveraging the sentiment of those who want immediate peace between Russia and Ukraine. Indeed, Trump claims to be able to “interrupt the war in 24 hours”, to initiate a negotiation between the two powers. That same peace that for Haley would only be configured with a surrender by Putin.
