In Ukraine, the Russian occupation forces allegedly blew up the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station above the Dnieper river in the Kherson region. The valley will be at risk of severe flooding. Novaya Kakhovka and its coastal villages are already under water. President Zelensky has ordered an emergency meeting of the National Security and Defense Council regarding the dam burst. Russian propagandists claim that the dam collapsed “on its own” and was not undermined.
The head of the Kherson regional state administration, Oleksandr Prokudin, announced the evacuation of residents of the right bank of the Dnieper. It is not possible to evacuate the occupied left bank population.
A safety manual was published in Ukrainian social networks: “National police units and state emergency services in the Kherson region, on the right bank of the Dnipro River, namely: the villages of Mykolaivka, Olhivka, Lyovo, Tyaginka, Poniativka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Poniativka, Prydniprovske, Sadove and partly the city of Kherson – Korabel Island”.
The post adds: “The water level is rising and everyone in the danger zone must: turn off all electrical equipment, retrieve documents and essential supplies, look after loved ones and pets, and follow the instructions of rescuers and traffic police”.
According to other media reports, the mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontiev, confirmed the damage caused by the attacks on the night hydroelectric power station. According to Leontiev, it is not yet necessary to evacuate the inhabitants of the city, who are preparing for the worst in any case. The Dnieper dams were last blown up by order of Adolf Hitler during the offensive of Soviet troops in 1943. The conditions and responsibilities of what happened during these hours at the strategically located hydroelectric power plant are not clear.
