The prospects are uncertain for the more than 400 children in the Child Development Center in the Carlos Meisel neighborhood of Barraquilla, as well as for the pregnant and nursing mothers who received nutritional and psychological care in this facility after the excesses and looting that took place. place They reported to the scene on Monday 5 June after an alleged case of sexual abuse by a teacher against a minor of the CDI in the sector.
Due to the situation, the District Office of Social Management, together with the ICBF, has set up worktables to analyze the relocation of minors who are no longer fed and schooled.
According to Patricia Vargas, Early Childhood Director of the Barranquilla Mayor’s Office, the situation is “complex for rapid relocation of minors.”
“It is very difficult to move them overnight, we have no resources, it is not just a search for the location, it is a process because the ICBF requires certain parameters that must be met,” he said.
The official stated that at this time there is “no clarity as to where the children may be transferred”.
He also added that they are evaluating the damage to the institution: “we still don’t know the amount of the losses, we are evaluating to get a consolidated figure.”
According to the official, the CDI was closed for the time being and authorities are inspecting the security cameras of the place to find the vandals who participated in the looting of the children’s center.
On the other hand, regarding the teacher allegedly involved in the sexual abuse of the minor at the education center, it was learned that he had been working at the CDI for more than three years as an Art and Culture workshop leader and teaching the boys and girls of the place. Apparently, according to the comments, they never saw him exhibit any unusual behavior.
Reward
Colonel Óscar Daza, Commander(e) of the Barranquilla Metropolitan Police, confirmed the reward of up to 10 million pesos for information leading to the arrest of those who participated in these acts of vandalism.
The officer insisted that “it is investigating whether those responsible for these events, residents of other neighborhoods in the sector, took advantage of the complaint and the attack against the teacher to steal everything.”
ICBF intervention
The director of the Atlantic region of the ICBF, Benjamín Colante, expressed the guidance that the institution carries out with the minor who is allegedly abused.
“Our ombudsman is currently carrying out a process to restore the minor’s rights precisely to protect her from all this series of situations where she was coerced by an alleged aggressor,” Collante said.
The girl, who is in her family environment, was attended by the interdisciplinary team of one of the ICBF family ombudsmen. Earlier, the corresponding interviews and legal medical examinations were conducted for the various competent entities and “it is in the hands of the authorities to clarify the events that have taken place in light of the complaint filed by his relatives. There is a prosecutor who attends the case, there is a family ombudsman who attends the case and of course the police authorities who attend the case,” Collante added in a statement.
