The toll from the methanol-cut cider poisoning that occurred in Russia is 30 dead and 66 drunk. Five of those poisoned are children and 29 of them are pregnant. Their condition is very serious. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation.
Moscow officials fear that poison cider is now commonplace throughout Russia. The owner of the company that produces the drink – Adnkronos reports – has been arrested and faces up to ten years in prison if found guilty.
Methanol is a highly toxic alcohol that can have a variety of uses: antifreeze, solvent, or reagent, but it can also be used as a fuel for engines or as an additive – strictly illegal – to increase the alcohol content of alcoholic products such as wine.
