Uber shoots and kills driver: ‘I thought he was going to kidnap me’

A woman who believed she had been kidnapped shot the Uber driver. In El Paso, Texas (United States), 48-year-old Phoebe Copas killed the man driving the car she had summoned to escort her to the local casino near the Mexican border. . The man, who was hit by multiple bullets in the head, died in the hospital he was taken to after being kept alive for several days due to a machine.

He was charged with the murder of 48-year-old Daniel Pietra, who was arrested shortly after the June 16 shooting, and his bail was set at $1.5 million. When questioned, the woman said she saw signs for the Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez during the trip and feared that the man had taken her across the border.

At this point, he pulled his pistol, which is legal to carry concealed and out of sight in Texas, out of his bag and shot the driver in the head multiple times. The car crashed into the highway barriers, and the woman didn’t immediately call the police, but first took pictures of Piedra and sent them to her boyfriend, and then called for help. When police arrived on the scene, they found Copas’ boyfriend, who was helping the woman holding the murder weapon get out of the car. Investigators determined that Piedra never deviated from the intended course and was not near any point of entry into Mexico.

A fundraising event was launched on the GoFundMe platform to support Daniel Pietra’s family, while a fundraiser launched on the same site to help Phoebe Copas with legal costs sparked controversy. After receiving dozens of complaints from users, GoFundMe closed the page on the woman, reminding that the platform and the funds raised cannot be used to support the legal costs of those accused of a violent crime.
