Brazil, Bolsonaro ineligible until 2030: banned by judges

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been declared ineligible until 2030 for abuse of power in relation to some statements made about the regularity of Brazil’s voting system ahead of last year’s elections. The seven justices of the Superior Electoral Court of Brasilia voted by majority to impeach the former president for eight years. This means that Bolsonaro will not be able to run in the next presidential elections, but possibly in those of 2030, when he will turn 75. The judges argued that the former president abused his power when he summoned ambassadors to his residence last year and made unfounded allegations about the South American country’s electronic voting system ahead of last year’s election, which current head of state Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won. Two judges sided with Bolsonaro, saying he had the right to express himself freely: the decisive vote went to Minister Cármen Lúcia. Lula’s predecessor announced that he will appeal the decision: “Today I was stabbed in the back.”
