Clashes in France over Nahel and Macron cancel state trip to Germany

French President Emmanuel Macron “spoke by telephone with German President Steinmeier and briefed him on the situation in his country”, asking to “postpone the planned state visit to Germany”. The German presidency announces it. Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Germany was supposed to take place from 2 to 4 July. The postponement comes amid heightened tensions in the country following the death of 17-year-old Nahel, killed by a police officer in Nanterre.

Berlin makes it known that “the visit will be recovered as soon as possible”. The German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, “regrets the cancellation” of Macron’s visit “and fully understands the situation in the neighboring country”, continues the German presidency, stressing that “the federal president follows developments with great attention” and “he hopes that the violence in the streets ends as soon as possible and that social peace can be restored”.
