Born, Erdogan changes his mind: Turkey’s green light to Sweden’s accession

After several clashes, white smoke has arrived: there is unanimity within NATO for Sweden’s membership. Ukraine’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance is the crux on the leaders’ table at the NATO summit in Vilnius, which officially opens tomorrow, but in the meantime the green light has come for Stockholm. The announcement was made by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg: “I am pleased to announce that following the meeting I arranged with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, President Erdogan has agreed to forward the protocol of Sweden’s accession to the Grand National Assembly as soon as possible and ensure its ratification. This is a historic step that makes all NATO allies stronger and more secure”. Whether Ankara has received any guarantees from an approach to Brussels remains to be seen, but in the meantime, a heavy blow is coming for Vladimir Putin, who sees yet another neighboring country joining the Atlantic Pact as a reaction to the invasion of Ukraine.
