17-year-old girl had abortion and burned her fetus

A 19-year-old girl in the US state of Nebraska was sentenced to 90 days in prison and two years of probation for burning the fetus, whose mother had taken pills to terminate her pregnancy and had abortion. “The court finds probation appropriate, but has decided that a prison sentence is necessary because of the seriousness of the crime and non-compliance with the law,” the judge said.

Celeste B., now 19 and 17 at the time, pleaded guilty to illegally hiding the remains after a miscarriage in her third trimester, about 28 weeks pregnant, above the 20-week limit set by Nebraska law. His mother, 42-year-old Jessica B., faces up to five years in prison for helping him. At first a youngshe would tell investigators she had given birth to a stillborn fetus. But according to court records, she and her mother had argued in Facebook chats about taking the abortion pills and then “burning the evidence.” The mother and daughter buried the remains several times in different places in the north of Norfolk and then excavated them.

Police launched an investigation in June 2022, before the Supreme Court abolished the national right to abortion and left it to US states to determine whether or how the procedure would be allowed. At the time, both the mother and her 17-year-old daughter were residing in Nebraska, where abortion was banned 20 weeks after conception. In early 2023, lawmakers approved a ban on abortions 12 weeks after conception.

The case inevitably aroused horror. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, late-term abortions are very rare and most occur in the U.S. well before the 13th week of pregnancy. In recent years many Republican-led US states have imposed restrictions on abortion, and more women in those states are turning to online abortion pills as an alternative solution to not getting pregnant. Greer Donley, a law professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, warns: “This is really sad because people resort to this kind of means when they’re really desperate, and what really makes people desperate is abortion bans.”
