President Zelensky and Minister Kuleba, as well as the US ambassador to Ukraine, condemned the attack on Odessa. Russia claims that the Ukrainians were preparing “terrorist acts”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, as well as US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget A. Brink, have strongly condemned the Russian missile attack on Odessa.
Kuleba and Zelensky respond
Kuleba called on the international community to respond to Russia’s actions, pointing out that the bombings wreaked havoc on the historic center of the city.
Kuleba wrote on social media that Russian missiles once again caused death and destruction in the historic center of Odessa, which is under UNESCO protection.
“Rockets aimed at peaceful cities, residential buildings, the cathedral … There is no excuse for Russian evil. As always, this evil will lose. And there will certainly be a reaction. They will feel this reaction,” noted Volodymyr Zelensky.
“All those who suffered from this recent terrorist attack are being helped. I am grateful to everyone who helps people and to everyone who is with Odessa in their thoughts and emotions. We will get through this. We will restore peace. For this, we must defeat the Russian evil,” the Ukrainian president said.
The voice of the US ambassador and the Ministry of Defense of Russia
“Russia continues its relentless attacks on the people and infrastructure of Odessa, a World Heritage Site and an important port for global food security,” Ambassador Brink tweeted.
“Russia’s unjust war against Ukraine and its people is causing terrible losses. The ruined cathedral, ruined houses and burning grain silos should once again make it clear that everything has been affected,” she added.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry said the troops attacked at night with “high-precision” weapons on facilities “where terrorist actions against Russia were being prepared using unmanned boats”.
Five types of missiles
The Ukrainian army’s local command said five types of missiles were used in the rocket attack that Russia carried out on the night from Saturday to Sunday on the Odessa region. Kalibr, Oniks, Iskander-K, Ch-22 missiles and Iskander-M missiles were fired.
The vast majority of the rockets fired were shot down by Ukrainian air defenses, but some hit infrastructure and civilian buildings. So far, one person is known to have lost his life and 19 were injured. Four of the victims are children, according to the information provided.
The shelling hit the port infrastructure, at least six residential buildings and dozens of cars. In the center of Odessa, a shell destroyed the building of the Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate.
