Global sales of bibles will increase in 2022

After a sharp drop at the start of the corona pandemic, more people came into possession of the Bible in 2022 than in previous years.

Last year, 35.5 million copies were distributed, about three million more than in the previous year, the German Bible Society in Stuttgart said Thursday, citing data from the World Federation of Bible Societies in Swindon, England. In 2019, the association distributed more than 40 million Bibles worldwide for the first time.

According to this information, the share of digital editions of the Bible will grow to more than a quarter of total circulation by 2022. About 28 percent of all “complete” Bibles sold were downloaded from the Internet.

The Scripture Distribution Statistics, compiled annually by the World Federation of Bible Societies, includes figures only from publishers and organizations belonging to that Federation. The general secretary, Dirk Gevers, said the “effective distribution” of the Bible is made possible by a worldwide network of 160 national Bible societies. The goal is that everyone gets the Bible.

In Poland, the Bible Society has been active since October 1816. It is an associate member of the Polish Ecumenical Council and an associate member of the United Bible Societies uniting national Bible societies around the world.

Where are the most copies sold?

Countries with the largest number of new Bibles distributed in 2022 included Brazil (4.8 million copies), the United States (2.6 million), and India (2.5 million).

A notable increase in sales, from 1.2 million to 1.8 million, was also recorded in China and predominantly Buddhist Cambodia, where Bible sales doubled to 25,000. copies. Most Bibles were printed in Spanish (5.8 million), English (5.4 million), and Portuguese (4.9 million), followed by Mandarin (1.8 million).
