Maui disaster: At least 80 killed in wildfires. There are 60 Italians in Hawaii

the swing gets worse fires that hit the island of maui. They have at least 80 i dead while the doubt grows if everything was done to avoid the massacre. The Hawaiian Attorney General has therefore opened an investigation to verify the management of the emergency. The risk of fire is well known in Hawaii and therefore Maui is equipped with an elaborate alarm system. But many survivors report not hearing any sirens or receiving a warning to give them time to prepare. Some said they only realized the danger when they saw flames or heard explosions. Currently in hawaii are 60 Italians who, however, would not be among the victims. The guarantees came from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonio Tajani, and from the US authorities.

Emergency management records in Hawaii show that warning sirens did not go off when they should have alerted citizens to take cover. Authorities sent alarm messages to cell phones, televisions and radio stations, but widespread blackouts caused by the fire made communication difficult. The matter will now be analyzed by the investigators. Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez said her office will review the decision-making process and policies in place to handle the emergency.

The Maui County Hazard Mitigation Plan, updated in 2020, identified Lahaina and other western area communities as having frequent wildfires and several buildings at risk. The report also noted that West Maui had the second highest rate of households without cars and the highest rate of non-English speakers, which would have complicated communications. At least three wildfires have raged on the island, fueled by a dry summer and strong winds from a passing hurricane. The most serious one erupted on Tuesday in Lahaina, leaving a trail of rubble and destruction. Fear returned on Friday with a new fire that prompted an evacuation from Kaanapali to West Maui.
