Germany plans to provide the Ukrainian armed forces with the latest Luna NG unmanned aerial vehicles with the ability to take off silently on any terrain.
Luna NG (New Generation) is a new development from Rheinmetall, better than the previous model in all important parameters. These drones can not only perform reconnaissance, but also create LTE networks and intercept communications and generate interference.
The drone system includes a ground station, a launch pad and military trucks. It is the launcher that allows you to silently launch the Luna NG on any terrain. Drones can carry out reconnaissance and attack missions, reports the German daily Bild.
Next generation drones
The drones weigh 40 kg and can stay in the air for up to 8 hours, cover a distance of 100 km and soar to a height of up to 5 km. The control system is so automated that no previous experience piloting unmanned aerial vehicles is required to master it.
The cost of the order is unknown. In 2019, Berlin would buy nine such systems for 130 million euros. It was intended that the first aircraft would be used by the German army in the same year. The Bundeswehr also plans to purchase an attack version of the drones. However, the German government must first establish rules for the use of armed drones.
Rheinmetall also plans to start production of armored equipment in Ukraine within three years. The construction of the factory will cost 200 million euros and the capacity will be 400 vehicles per year.
Ukraine asked Germany for Taurus missiles. They can reach Moscow
At the same time, according to media reports, the government in Berlin does not agree to the transfer of Taurus long-range cruise missiles to Ukraine for fear of using them to attack targets on Russian territory.
The range of the Taurus missile is 500 km (Moscow is 450 km from the border with Ukraine). Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly warned Ukrainian forces not to use weapons supplied by Berlin to shell Russian territory.
