A Russian warship stopped a cargo ship in the Black Sea with warning fire. The incident happened on Sunday morning.
According to the statement of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, the ship of the Black Sea Fleet “Vasily Bykov” opened a warning fire to stop the cargo ship “Sukra Okan” in the southwestern part of the Black Sea.
The cargo ship, flying the flag of Palau, entered the Ukrainian port of Izmail and did not respond to a request to stop for inspection. According to the Russian side, “Sukra Okan” was suspected of transporting prohibited goods.
To force the ship to stop, the Russian sailors opened warning fire. Then a Ka-29 helicopter was sent with a group of Russian soldiers.
After radio communication, the ship stopped and the inspection team boarded. After conducting the inspection, the Russians allowed the ship to continue its journey to the Ukrainian port.
Dangerous in the Black Sea. Russia broke the grain deal
On July 17, Russia announced its withdrawal from last year’s grain deal in Istanbul, thanks to the involvement of Turkey and the UN. After the contract was not renewed, the Defense Ministry in Moscow announced that it would consider ships entering Ukrainian ports as military targets.
Ukraine and Russia are referred to as the “breadbasket of the world” because they supply about a third of the world’s wheat sold. Due to the war in Ukraine, transport through the Black Sea ports collapsed and trade came to a virtual standstill.
According to UN data, during the operation of the so-called Nearly 33 million tons of Ukrainian grain was exported to the Black Sea Corridor.
According to British military intelligence, the grain deal has reduced the scale of hostilities in the Black Sea, but Russia’s withdrawal from the deal could mean “an increase in the intensity and scale of violence in this area”.
The Center for Oriental Studies estimates that Moscow is seeking not only to further complicate the functioning of Ukraine’s economy, but also to increase unwillingness to further support it in neighboring countries.
