Poland, Morawiecki challenges Brussels: “We need more sovereignty in the EU”. war fears

“Putin and Wagner threaten our borders, more sovereignty in the EU. There is agreement with Meloni on the idea of Europe”. That sums up Corriere della Sera’s interview with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. “Our vision – continues Warsaw’s number one – is clear, more sovereignty and less European superstate, equal treatment for all member states, a functional and effective migration system, financial and responsible management and a safe Europe” .

Regarding possible problems with foreign countries, Morawiecki recalls that “Poland has been suffering attacks on its eastern border with Belarus for more than two years. It is a joint plan by Russia and Belarus who want to destabilize not only our country, but the entire EU”. We then move on to the relationship with Giorgia Meloni: “We have common ideas in many areas, including strengthening ties between our countries and promoting a prosperous future for Europe. Poland and Italy want a strong Europe, an EU that is a global player and that takes equally into account the interests of all Member States”.

As for the reform of justice in the EU Court, which he says violates EU law, Morawiecki does not hide and responds to the accusations: “Poland does not violate EU laws, but it remembers where its borders are. In reality, this is not a legal dispute, but a political one, in which national sovereignty is at stake. Poland is and will always be open to seeking compromise with the EU institutions, but will never allow them to violate state sovereignty”.
