Massive power outage in Brazil: millions without electricity

A massive power outage in Brazil left millions of people without electricity for hours. The interruption in distribution occurred at around 8 am (Brazilian local time) on August 15. The biggest problems were in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Bahia, Amazonas, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

The Neoenergia distributor attributes the power outage to an event in the interconnected national system. There is talk of a 16,000 megawatt cut “after the opening of the North/Southeast Link”, but the reasons are still being investigated.

Supply has been restored in much of the country, but nearly half of residential areas in the North and one-fifth of those in the North East are still affected by the power outage, according to the latest Energy Department bulletin. “Everything will return to normal in the next few hours,” the government said, without making any statement about the incident. According to CNN, Brazil experienced 42 power outages in 2022. There were 15 more power outages between January and June of this year.
