Meeting of the leaders of the US, Japan and South Korea Decisions have been made

On Friday, at a meeting at Camp David, it was agreed to coordinate actions between the three countries in the face of “threats” and “provocations” from China and North Korea.

Japan and the Republic of Korea do not have the best relations because of the still vivid memory of the Japanese colonization of the Korean Peninsula and the crimes committed during it. Both countries are important allies of the United States, especially with regard to North Korea and China. Last Friday, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol met at Camp David near Washington DC to finalize a tripartite agreement.

At the meeting, it was decided that Washington, Tokyo and Seoul would consult on issues related to threats from Beijing and Pyongyang. A new chapter in trilateral relations was announced. A number of initiatives were discussed to form the framework for this cooperation. These include at least annual trilateral meetings, joint military exercises, cooperation on modern technologies such as artificial intelligence and the launch of an early warning mechanism for disruptions in the supply chain of key industrial goods.

Against “dangerous and aggressive” actions by China

“We strongly oppose any unilateral attempt to change the status quo in Indo-Pacific waters,” the joint statement said. In contrast to South Korea’s reluctance to openly condemn Beijing, as signaled during the talks, the joint statement pointed to China’s “dangerous and aggressive” actions in the waters of the South China Sea. Reference was made to the continued militarization of the basin and the risky use of Coast Guard and maritime militia vessels.

The meeting was received negatively by Beijing. Joe Biden, in response to Chinese criticism, said the meeting was “not about China”.

“That was not the purpose of the meeting,” the president said, adding, “It cannot be said that we do not share concerns about economic constraints or heightened tensions” caused by Beijing.
