At least 13 people were killed and five seriously injured when a bus crashed into a cliff in the Andes in Peru, local officials said. The traffic accident occurred on the Los Libertadores highway on Saturday morning. The vehicle was carrying around 50 passengers from the Andean town of Vilcashuaman to the capital, Lima.
In the Huancavelica region in the southeast of the South American country, the bus somersaulted and fell about 200 meters. Police and fire crews arriving at the scene removed the bodies of those injured in the accident. The injured were transferred to the hospital in the municipality of Pisco.
Traffic accidents are frequent in Peru due to speeding and poor road maintenance.
