Presidents congratulate Bernardo Arévalo on winning elections in Guatemala

Argentina will strengthen “the historic ties of friendship” that unite the South American country with Guatemala following the victory of Arévalo de León in the elections held this Sunday in the Central American country.

“Argentina greets the Guatemalan people on Election Day and congratulates the President-elect, @BArevalodeLeon. We will continue to strengthen the historic bonds of friendship that unite us,” Argentina’s Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero wrote on his web account Monday. X, formerly known as Twitter.

For his part, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, last Monday congratulated the newly elected president of Guatemala and congratulated the people of Guatemala for their peaceful participation in these elections.

In a statement, Borrell welcomed this peaceful participation and the “steadfast commitment to democracy that has been shown throughout the process” by the Guatemalan people and believed that the result of the vote “is already very clear” even pending the final announcement of the official results by the Supreme Electoral Council.

“The EU congratulates the winning presidential candidate, Mr. Bernardo Arévalo, and the vice-presidential candidate, Ms. Karin Herrera. We welcome the fact that the outgoing president, Mr. Alejandro Giammattei, acknowledged the result and stressed the need for a transition and handover of power to take place on January 14, 2024,” Borrell wrote.

The head of community diplomacy said it was “crucial” that all institutions and social sectors “join this effort in the interest of the country”, which he sees as a long-term partner for the EU.

“Democratic governance in the country (…) is the necessary foundation for the authorities’ efforts to achieve sustainable and inclusive development and social justice,” Borrell stressed.
