Russian President Vladimir Putin first commented on the crash of the plane carrying the head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, on board.
“In connection with this plane crash, I would first like to express my sincere condolences to the families of all victims,” Putin said.
On Wednesday, an Embraer Legacy 600 aircraft owned by Yevgeny Prigozhin’s company crashed in the Tver region flying from Moscow to Saint Petersburg. On board the machine were the founder of the Wagner Group, his deputy and head of security Valery Chekalov, as well as the formation commander Dmitry Utkin and several mercenaries. All passengers and three crew members (a total of 10 people) were killed.
Putin stressed that the members of the Wagner group on board “have made an important contribution to our common cause: the fight against the neo-Nazi regime in Ukraine.” “We remember and we won’t forget,” he added.

He went on to say that he had known Prigozhin “for a long time, from the early 1990s”. “He was a man with a complicated destiny, he made serious mistakes in his life and achieved the expected results, both for himself and, when I asked him, for a common goal, as in recent months. He was a talented man, a talented businessman,” the Russian president said.
– He worked not only in our country, but also abroad, especially in Africa. There he was engaged in the extraction of oil, gas, precious metals and stones. As far as I know, he just came back from Africa yesterday and met some officials here,” he said.
He explained that an investigation into the plane crash with the Wagner ships on board is under way, which “will be carried out in its entirety and terminated”. “We’ll see what researchers say in the near future.” Now expert advice is being implemented – technical and genetic. It will take some time,” Putin said.
