Former Uruguayan forward Waldemar Victorino, known for playing for Cagliari in Italy in the 1982-83 season, died at the age of 71. Victorino was hospitalized in serious condition after his suicide attempt, but doctors were unable to save him. The former rossoblù striker was also famous for inspiring a character from the famous cartoons Holly and Benji.
The 1952 team, which won the Copa Libertadores in 1980 and the intercontinental cup at the Nacional of Montevideo the following season, came to Italy in the final years of its career; however, he had only played ten games with Cagliari.
Victorino inspired Holly and Benji writer Yoichi Takahashi enough to dedicate himself to a character known as “Ramon Victorino”, the Uruguayan youth national team’s best hero.
Cagliari Calcio mourns the passing of Waldemar Victorino, the pure talent of Uruguayan football. He played for Rossoblù only one season, in ’82/’83, but soon won the love of all the fans.
